چکیده

In mobile communications, speech is often degraded by ambient noise and acoustic echo. Both problems have attracted a high level of research interest over the last decades. Recently dual channel solutions for noise reduction have been investigated and can yield better performance than single channel solutions. This paper presents an analysis of the echo problem based on recordings with a handsfree dual channel mock-up phone and proposes a novel residual echo power spectral density (PSD) estimator that uses two microphone signals instead of one. The proposed PSD estimate is compared to an existing single channel residual echo PSD estimator before being assessed within an echo postfilter. Our experiments show that the proposed dual-channel echo PSD outperforms the single channel postfilter, especially at low signal to echo ratios.

Partitioned residual echo power estimation for frequency-domain acoustic echo cancellation and postfiltering

Residual echo arises in hands–free telephony equipment due to insufficient echo canceler convergence, but can be suppressed using a postfilter. The residual echo power spectral density is the most crucial control parameter for both frequency–domain acoustic echo cancellation and combined residual echo and noise postfiltering. In this contribution we present and compare residual echo power spect...

New optimal filtering approaches for hands-free telecommunication terminals

The use of Wiener filtering to simultaneously reduce all the perturbations at the sound pick-up of hands-free terminals is investigated in this paper. This analysis of perturbation reduction is a global approach as all types of perturbations to desired signal are reduced by a unique filter. Filters derived from this approach are applied in two different contexts: hands-free radiotelephony in ca...

Combined noise and echo reduction in hands-free systems: a survey

The modern telecommunications field is concerned with freedom and, in this context, hands-free systems offer subscribers the possibility of talking more naturally, without using a handset. This new type of use leads to new problems which were negligible in traditional telephony, namely the superposition of noise and echo on the speech signal. To solve these problems and provide a quality that i...

Adaptive Polynomial Filters and their Application to Nonlinear Acoustic Echo Cancellation

Bibliography 184 viii Contents 1 1 Introduction Linear adaptive filtering plays an important role in statistical signal processing and respective theoretical and practical results are well established [23]. In practice, however, nonlinear adaptive filtering often becomes desirable if the considered systems exhibit non-linear behaviour. Acoustic echo cancellation represents an important example ...

Adaptation of Acoustic Echo Cancellers Incorporating a Memoryless Nonlinearity

With acoustic echo cancellation for hands-free communications, dominant nonlinearities occur at the loudspeaker and its amplifier. This contribution addresses memoryless nonlinearities as they are common, e.g., in loudspeaker amplifiers of mobile phone terminals. An NLMS (normalized least mean square)-type adaptation algorithm is investigated which allows simultaneous identification of a nonlin...
